On the Track of Unknown Animals

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

On the Track of Unknown Animals is a cryptozoology book by Bernard Heuvelmans.

Originally published in two volumes in French in 1955, it is the seminal book in mordern cryptozoology (the study of reports of animals not recognized by science). The 557 page single volume English translation (1958) has been cited by various investigators as instrumental to their involvement with the subject.

The book consists of seven parts: an overview, and six chapters that geographically divide the world's cryptids. The book is written in a realistic manner, and it shows respect for the indigenous people who share with outsiders their beliefs and knowledge of the animals of their respective regions.

Unlike some books, it does not mix the supernatural with these reports: no UFOs or interdimensional beings. It certainly does report myths associated with the creatures, but seeks a scientific explanation for them.

The book has been updated, and a noted 676 page edition was published in 1995.
