<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Oma Desala is a fictional character, an ascended Ancient, in the television series Stargate SG-1 played by Carla Boudreau and Mel Harris.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Background

Although the ascended Ancients have the rule not to interfere with corporal beings, Oma decided to break this rule and to help others ascend. Because of this she became an outcast among the other ascended beings. However instead of teaching people what they can do as ascended beings, she only helps them ascend and then leaves them to experience for themselves what they are able to do now. She acts mostly on the planet Kheb, on which some sort of Buddhist temple is located, in which the people learn about ascension. However she once made a great mistake when she helped the fallen System Lord Anubis to ascend. Anubis found ancient information about ascension and thus was able to pass all of Oma's tests. When it was revealed who he really is, the others decided not to completely de-ascend him to punish Oma for her constant rule-breaking and to force her to watch how he brings terror upon the galaxy.

Appearances

Oma Desala first appears in the episode "Maternal Instinct", in which SG-1 comes to the planet Kheb in their search for Shifu, the young son of Apophis and Sha're. During their stay, Daniel learns from a monk about Oma Desala, whose name he translates as "Mother Nature". Also the monk teaches Daniel Jackson to use his mind to manipulate fire and other things but Daniel finally finds out that it wasn't him who performed these miracles but Oma Desala, who is in fact a non-corporeal being. With this knowledge he decides to leave Shifu in Oma's care. Shifu appears one year later - now aged to the state of a young boy - and reveals to Daniel that Oma taught him how to forget the evil Goa'uld genetic memory he possesses, and to ascend himself.

Oma appears again in the episode "Meridian", in which Daniel is poisoned by Naqahdriah radiation. She appears to him in some kind of dream and tells him that although she can't heal him she can help him to ascend. After some thinking Daniel decides to do so and ascends.

About one year later Daniel helps his former comrades of SG-1 to prevent Anubis from obtaining the Eye of Ra, a powerful weapon. During his interaction with his friends Oma watches him and helps Daniel's friend Skaara (who was mortally wounded by a Staff weapon) to ascend. She later intervenes when Daniel wants to kill Anubis to save the people of Abydos and prevents him from doing so. When Anubis destroys Abydos she helps the entire population to ascend. Because Daniel broke the rules of the ascendeds, Oma is forced to de-ascend him and to take away his memories - in fact however she buries them deep in his subconscious. ("Full Circle")

Oma's final appearance is in the episode "Threads". In this episode she tells Daniel that she again brought him (not ascended him) to a higher plane of existence after he was mortally wounded by Replicator Carter. During his stay in this existence he is informed about her and Anubis' past. At the end of this episode as Anubis was about to destroy all life in the galaxy with the doomsday weapon at Dakara. Oma decided that since she was the one to help him ascend, it was her job to fix it, so she grabbed Anubis and they both vanished to somewhere unknown and the audience was left wondering if she is ever to return.
