Octavia Estelle Butler (b. June 22, 1947February 24, 2006) was an award-winning American science fiction author. Butler is the winner of Hugo and Nebula Awards for her novel Parable of the Talents and novelette Bloodchild. She is the first science fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant and one of the first African-American women to break into the world of science fiction.

Butler was born and raised in Pasadena, California. She never got to know her father who died while she was still a baby, and was raised by her mother and grandmother. She began reading science fiction as a child, drawn to the openness of the genre.
