Four months after the Cylons arrive on New Caprica, conditions are more difficult than ever. Galactica and the orbiting fleet jumped away and remain safe but Adama is determined to return to rescue the rest of the population. Baltar is no more than a puppet for a government controlled by the Cylons. The Cylons have created a human police force who are despised by their fellow colonists and considered traitor. They are forced to wear masks to protect their identities. A resistance movement has formed led by Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol and Samuel Anders.

Colonel Saul Tigh has been captured, held prisoner, and tortured by the Cylons. In the process he loses an eye. His wife, Ellen Tigh is determined to have her husband released and sleeps with the Cylon Brother Cavil in exchange for his release. Once released he joins the resistance movement and coordinates a plan for police trainee, Duck, to blow himself up at the graduation ceremony for the new police officers. Tyrol argues against the plan believing it crosses a moral line but Tigh sees it as being no different than sending soldiers to die in a time of war.

Kara Thrace is held captive in an apartment by the Cylon Leoben and forced to endure his attempt to create an air of domesticity. She kills him repeatedly but he returns again and again to calmly continue their life together believing he will ultimately make her fall in love with him.

On board Pegasus, an overweight Lee Adama vents his frustration about his father's rigorous training runs for a planned rescue of New Caprica to wife, Dualla. Lee believes the mission to be impossible but his father thinks he's gone soft and Dualla agrees. Adama confides in cylon, Sharon who has earned his trust.

Adama sends a Raptor to observe New Caprica and the insurgents manage to make contact with Adama via the Raptor. The contact is minimal but enough to reassure Tigh and the others that Galactica will return for them. Duck carries out his suicide bombing killing himself and several fellow officers.
