A novel is a work of fiction (ostensibly), written in prose (usually), that provides a narrative of events (most of the time). For the purposes of the two most prestigious awards in the field of science fiction, the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, a novel must have a word count of 40,000 words or more in order to qualify for the Novel category.
