Novelettes are literary works, often first published in magazines.
Novelettes are longer than short stories and shorter than novellas. For awards definition purposes, novelettes are usually defined as being between 7,500 words and 17,500 words in length.
Unlike short stories, which tend to have a single story focus and a very limited number of characters, novelettes can accommodate multiple storylines and more numerous characters.
Some Hugo Award–winning novelettes include "Fire Watch" by Connie Willis (1983); "Sandkings" by George R. R. Martin (1980); and "Unicorn Variation" by Roger Zelazny (1982).
