Nog is a fictional character on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Nog is a Ferengi, a sentient species that places commerce and profit above all things. He is the son of Rom and Prinadora and the nephew of DS9 bar operator, Quark. Nog grew up on the station alongside Jake Sisko.
As a boy, Nog often got into trouble, something which Commander Benjamin Sisko would sometimes use to apply leverage to Quark, the Ferengi bar keeper and also his uncle. Jake and Nog would often loiter above the promenade, watching all the interesting people of different races go by. It was hard for Nog at times to be friends with a human like Jake. Once, they double dated, and Nog made the error of asking the human female to "chew my food for me". It took him a while to understand that it was a mistake to treat a Human female like a Ferengi female.
Still as Rom grew up, he came to understand and even respect the Federation's values. He noticed that his father Rom was treated with no respect by other Ferengi, since he didn't have the talent for business that was so central to the Ferengi culture. Still, Rom had a gift for working with technology, something which Chief of Operations Miles O'Brien soon discovered and put to use. Seeing his fathers self-worth grow as the Humans treated him with the repect of a talented colleague, showed Nog that there were different ways to understand and evaluate people in the universe.
In a surprise to almost everyone, this led to Nog became the first Ferengi in Starfleet. He made a heroic cadet and later, an ensign, and lost his leg on the field of battle during the Dominion War. This dealt a crushing blow to Nog, but eventually he came out of his depression with the help of his friends, and, with the use of a cybernetic leg, continued to have a long and illustrious career in Starfleet. Occasional glimpses of the future seemed to indicate that Nog's Starfleet tenure would be long indeed.
Just because Nog was in Starfleet, does not mean he wasn't still a Ferengi. He would often use his dealing and negotiating skills, as well as his Ferengi advanced hearing, in the service of the Federation.
