Nineteen Eighty-Four is a 1949 dystopian novel by George Orwell. The story centers on government employee, Winston Smith who works for the Ministry of Truth in the totalitarian country of Oceania. The novel was seen as being a subversive and a negative influence was banned in many libraries around the world.
The year 1984 was picked by inverting the last two numbers of 1948, when the novel was created.
