Nine Miles Down is a 2008 philosophical thriller directed by Anthony Waller.

Synopsis

Adrian Paul portrays Thomas 'Jack' Jackman, a security expert who is sent out to a remote drilling station in the Sahara desert to investigate the loss of contact with the multi-national research team at the station. When he arrives at the outpost he discovers the station abandoned but well stocked with supplies. Forced to wait out a sandstorm, he awakens the next morning and finds a beautiful woman, Jennie "JC" Christianson (kate Nauta). JC claims she is the only surviving member of the science team who succumbed to fears, hallucinations and madness shortly after they had drilled to an unprecedent nine miles into the Earth's crust as per their mission. They breached a vast cavern and the project leader, Dr. Borman and Dr. Varga were both killed in the madness and despair that overcame the team and the others fled.

Jack is suspicious of JC's story but they must both stay until the police arrive. Jack believes his suspicions of JC are confirmed when headquarters informs him there were no female members of the science team. JC reveals more of her story, claiming the team believed they had drilled down to hell and released something evil. All came to believe this but her. Jack remains skeptical and JC replays a tape of the sounds from their exploration. The eerie sounds on the tape led the team to believe they were hearing the voices of millions of tortured souls.

On their way out to the drilling site the police helicopter comes across a vehicle in the sand and stop to investigate. They discover one of the scientist, Dr. Ivanov barely conscious and in position of a flask. They bring him to the hospital forcing Jack and JC to remain at the drill site another night.

Jack reveals to JC that his wife murdered their children and committed suicide and he has since been consumed by grief and guilt. Since arriving at the site he has been having visions and flashbacks of his family and believes his wife is trying to contact him from hell. He feels responsible for sending her there because of his affair. Jack comes to believe that JC is the personification of evil sent by his wife to test him.

Jack discovers more evidence indicating JC is an imposter and believes she is responsible for the deaths of the drilling crew. A warning left behind by Borman on video claims that they released an evil force and it must be stopped before it spreads to the rest of the world. JC encourages Jack to ignore Borman's claims but he believes she is evil and playing mind games.

Jack descends into madness and is determined to outwit the creature he believes JC truly is. Concerned for her own survival, JC decides to offer Jack what he wants most in hope that he won't kill her. She offers him his family back in exchange for his soul. But is it merely a tactic to ensure her survival or is she really capable of making the deal and revealing her true nature?
