Nightwing is a fictional comic book superhero owned by DC Comics. As the former Robin, he has deep roots in the history of Batman and the DC Comics superheroes. The story of how he transitioned from the first kid sidekick to a respected superhero adult has been rewritten a few times due to the changing continuity of the DC Universe. What follows is the most recent telling.

Character Origin

Nightwing began his superhero career as the original Robin, the junior crime fighting partner of Batman. Being a trained trapeze artist by his parents, who were circus people, he was very qualified, and took well to the training. After years working with Batman, and leading the Teen Titans, Dick was shot in the shoulder by the Joker. At this time, Batman felt he could not continue to risk his life, and fired him. Dick took the Robin identity with him, and began to lead the Titans full time. When he found out that Batman had taken in Jason Todd as a new Robin, Dick asked Batman about it. Bruce explained that Jason’s life was lost to crime anyway, and also finally admitted that he missed having a Robin. The next day, Dick gave Jason his Robin costume, telling him he will “grow into it”.

Unsure of what to do next, he confided in Superman. Superman told him of the legendary heroes of Krypton, Nightwing and Flamebird. Inspired by Superman and the story, Dick decided to take the name Nightwing and created a new superhero identity for himself.

Career Highlights

Nightwing has continued to lead the Teen Titans, and then the Outsiders (DC Comics). He worked for a while in Bludhaven and brought down the crime syndicate and corrupt police department that plagued that city. He allowed another vigilante to murder crime boss Blockbuster, a decision that he now regrets. Batman has counseled him to move on from this mistake, and Dick has tried to do so.

Relationships

Nightwing has since resolved his relationship problems with his adopted parent, Batman. He recently completed a year long world tour with Batman and Robin to re-trace the steps to the places Batman visited during his formative training. He developed a close brotherly relationship with Tim Drake, the current Robin. He is close friends with Wally West, Roy Harper, Donna Troy, and the rest of the former Titans. He has had a long friendship and an on-again, off-again romance with Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl and currently Oracle. He had a long romance with Starfire, whom he met in the Teen Titans, and still has feelings for her. He also had a brief fling with the Huntress, another costumed vigilante operating in Gotham City.

Logistics

As a martial artist and a crime fighter, Nightwing is second only to Batman. Nightwing is financed by a trust fund his parents left him, which Bruce Wayne’s business people have turned into a large enough fortune to keep him operating full time. Currently, Nightwing operates out of New York City. In his secret identity of Dick Grayson, he is the museum curator of the Cloisters, a (real-life) 14th century castle relocated from Europe to upper Manhatten as a museum.
