Nicholas Royle (b. 1963) was born in Manchester and recently returned to that city with his wife and two children after years of living in London. He is the author of five literary and disturbing novels – Counterparts, Saxophone Dreams, The Matter of the Heart, The Director’s Cut and Antwerp – in addition to more than 100 short stories, which have appeared in a wide variety of anthologies and magazines. He has edited twelve anthologies: Darklands, Darklands 2, A Book of Two Halves, The Tiger Garden: A Book of Writers’ Dreams, The Time Out Book of New York Short Stories, The Agony and the Ecstasy: New Writing for the World Cup, The Ex Files: New Stories About Old Flames, Neonlit: Time Out Book of New Writing, The Time Out Book of Paris Short Stories, Neonlit: Time Out Book of New Writing Volume 2, The Time Out Book of London Short Stories Volume 2 and Dreams Never End. He has written about books, film, art and music for a wide range of publications and is a regular contributor to Time Out, The Independent, The Guardian and The Independent on Sunday. Royle has won the British Fantasy Award three times and the Bad Sex Prize once. It case anyone doesn’t know, the latter is also a literary prize.
