Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) is a19th century American author born in Salem, Massachusetts. Considered a key figure in colonial American literature, Hawthorne's ancestry is notable, having descended from one of the judges, John Hathorne, who oversaw the Salem Witch Trials. His best known work includes the novels The House of Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter.
