Nathan Fillion is a Canadian actor born on March 27, 1971 in Edmonton Alberta. He is best known in the role of Captain Malcolm Reynolds on the short lived Joss Whedon series Firefly.
Career
Fillion's first ventures into acting began with theater. He first appeared on screen in the 1993 TV movie, Ordeal in the Arctic. His first truly successful role was on the soap opera, One Life to Live in which he played Rev. Joseph Frances for three years. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 1996 in the category "Outstanding Younger Actor". He left the show in in 1997 and moved to Los Angeles.
He guest-starred on several series including Spin City and The Outer Limits and appeared in the films Saving Private Ryan and Dracula 2000. In 2000 he won a starring role in the series Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. The series ran for four seasons and ended in 2001.
In 2002, he took on the role of Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the transport ship Serenity. The series also starred Gina Torres and Morena Baccarin. It was cancelled after airing only a few episodes but won a cult following. He won the "Cinescape Genre Face of the Future - Male" award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for the role.
In 2003, he played the villainous Caleb on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He appeared in five episodes of the series' final season. Other guest roles include the role of Adam Logan on the short lived series Miss Match, Pasadena and Justice League.
In 2005, He reprised the role of Malcolm Reynolds in the film Serenity which wrapped up the story begun in Firefly. He has also appeared in the films Water's Edge, Outing Riley, Slither and Waitress. In 2007, he will star in the lead role, Alex Tully, in the FOX series Drive created by his friend and Angel and Firefly writer Tim Minear. The same year, Fillion will star in White Noise 2: The Light alongside Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff.
Trivia
- The Firefly villain Jubal Early was named after General Jubal Early, a confederate civil war general and distant relative of Fillion.
- He auditioned for the role of Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
