Namor, The Sub-Mariner, is a comic book character owned by Marvel Comics.
Created by Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner was a cornerstone character during the Golden Age of Comics for Timely Comics, the company that would become Marvel Comics in the 1960s. When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Fantastic Four at the outset of the Silver Age of Comics, they decided to bring back Namor as well, first as a villain, then later as a hero in his own series. Since then, Sub-Mariner has starred in his own (now defunct) comic book, and several other short-lived series and mini-series.
Namor is considered one of the stronger Marvel characters, and has fought the Incredible Hulk to a standstill.
Namor was married to Lady Dorma and then Marrina. Both are now deceased. He has been romantically linked to Susan Storm, now married to Reed Richards, both members of The Fantastic Four. He had a cousin Namora and a second cousin Namorita, who are both now deceased. Recurring enemies are Attuma, Tiger Shark, Master Man, Warrior Woman, Llyra, Dr. Doom, Krang, Byrrah, Naga, U-Man, and Orka. Recent events connected to Marvel Comics' Civil War has brought him into conflict with Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D..
Character Origin and History
The Sub-Mariner was the offspring of Fen, a member of Atlantean royalty, and sea Captain Leonard McKenzie, both now deceased. The union of a surface dweller and a member of a water breathing species produced a mutant with incredible strength, the ability to breath both air and water, a very long life-span, and even tiny wings on his heels that give him the power of flight. Namor has spent much of his life at war with the surface world. He started out seeking
revenge for the careless destruction of the Atlantean's underwater city beneath the polar ice cap.
The Sub-Mariner's Golden Age Comic.
At first this mission brought him into conflict with the Original Human Torch, and led to classic battles between fire and water. During World War II, Namor decided to vent his hate on tha Nazis, and joined the Human Torch and Captain America to form The Invaders and battle for the allies. In the 1950s, after a battle with a villain called "Destiny", Namor was left to wander New York as a homeless amnesiac until discovered by the Silver Age Human Torch in an issue of the Fantastic Four. Since then, as the ruler of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor has become a major player in the Marvel Universe.
