A myth in the classic sense is a traditional story handed down by oral tradition that was accepted as true. Many cultural epics are of his mythic form. The study of myths, mythology enables scholars to better understand the world view of a given people or culture.

In modern popular usage, one meaning of the word has come to mean, roughly, the opposite of reliable, verifiable truth.

However, The use of the term "myth" is also used to indicate a story that is told to illustrate a point. Myths may surround real people and real events. There are many myths that are applied to snakes and Marylin Monroe, for example, but that does not mean that snakes and Marylin Monroe are fictitious.
