My Favorite Martian is a 1963 sitcom created by John L. Greene amd produced by Jack Chertok. Ray Walston starred as the title character, a man from Mars who crash lands on Earth and becomes stranded. Bill Bixby portrayed young newspaper reporter Tim O'Hara who witnesses the crash and takes the alien in as his roommate, agreeing to keep his identity secret and introducing him to friends as Uncle Martin.
Martin posessses unusual abilities including retractable antennae, telepathy, levitation, invisibility, and the ability to communicate with animals. He was presumably hundreds of years old and visited Earth often over the centuries, often making "suggestions" to some of the great minds in human history that lead to their great accomplishments. He possessed many exciting devices, such as a time machine and a damaged flying saucer. The show had great continuity, many running gags, and a wonderful recurring characters, such as scatterbrained landlady Mrs. Brown, and the ever suspicious Detective Brennan.
Follow Ups
An animated spinoff from Filmation debuted on CBS in 1973. The series featured Uncle Martin's young nephew Andromeda,, nicknamed Andy. In 1999, the series was made into a feature film starring Christopher Lloyd and Jeff Daniels.
