A Mutant is a new organism or individual that has developed a new character trait as the result of a sudden change in the DNA, gene, or chromosome of the organism. While mutations are occasionally beneficial, many mutations cause genetic disorders or present no noticeable change.
In the context of science fiction, human genetic mutations are sometimes the cause of the development of superhuman abilities. These mutations may be the result of natural evolution as seen in the Marvel Comics series X-Men or a response to a change in the environment, such as a nuclear disaster or other destructive event in which case the mutations are often presented as disabling abnormalities.
Fictional Appearances
Comics
- X-Men – Perhaps the most popular example of mutants in fiction, humans develop superhuman abilities as a result of mutations.
Movies
- World Without End – Following a nuclear holocaust in the future, the remaining humans develop mutations that result in a single eye.
- Total Recall – Humans living on Mars develop disfiguring mutations due to the conditions on the planet.
Novels
Television
- Heroes – Though the series focuses on evolution as the cause of the development of super powered humans, the means bears similarities to the X-Men.
