Mr. Mxyzptlk is a fictional comic book recurring villain, part of the world of Superman comics. Superman is a comic book superhero published by DC Comics.

Mr. Mxyzptlk (pronounced mix-yez-pittel-ik) is a magic imp from the 5th dimension, a place where they don't spell things with vowels, called Zrfff. He travels here, to the third dimension, to cause all sorts of mischief, particularly for the hero Superman.

Unfortunately, magic is one of the few things against which the Man of Steel's powers are helpless. Superman can only defeat the imp by tricking him into saying (or writing or spelling) his name backwards, thereby causing him to return to his native dimension for at least 90 days. When Superman does this, all the effects of Mxyzptlk’s magic disappear with him, and the world is returned to normal.

With his 5th dimensional magic, he can make just about anything happen that he can imagine. Whether the imp is truly evil, or just a mischievous prankster, is in the eye of the beholder (or the particular comic book writer). Ever since Superman’s earliest days, Mxyzptlk has plagued Superman, turning the hero’s world upside down. As one of Superman's earliest villains form the Golden Age of Comics, Mxy has appeared in many versions of the Superman TV shows and animated series'.
