Major Motoko Kusanagi is an elite cyborg and counter-terrorism agent in the Ghost in the Shell series. She is squad leader of Public Security Section 9.

Biography

Motoko was involved in near-fatal plane crash when she was a child, which forced her to become fully cyberized (the only organic parts of her left are a fist-sized chunk of brain-cells). The only other survivor of the crash was Hideo Kuze.

After years of intense training, Motoko became a crack elite forces squad leader, as well as one of the best electronic warfare agents ever. She first met fellow Section 9 members Ishikawa, Batou, and Saito while leading a special forces squad in Mexico during World War IV.

In the film series, the Major fused with the Puppet Master and left Section 9, but in the anime series this did not take place and she continues to lead the squad against various acts of Cyber-terrorism, such as the Laughing Man case and the Individual Eleven case.
