Morpheus is a fictional comic book fantasy character featured in the now classic horror and fantasy book, The Sandman (Vertigo). The series was published under the Vertigo label and owned by DC Comics.
The mythos was based around a personification of dreams, known as "Dream", (though often referred to as Morpheus) and his six siblings, Destiny, Death (Vertigo), Desire, Despair (Vertigo) (who was once Delight), Delirium, and Destruction, collectively known as the Endless. Each sibling commanded his own realm, with Morpheus controlling the realm known as the Dreaming, where sentient creatures visit when they sleep.
Dream is captured by an occult group in 1916 and held prisoner until 1988 when he escapes. He returns to his kingdom, finding areas of it in various degrees of dissaray. The series deals with the consequences of his imprisonment, as well as his relationship with his siblings, the creatures of the Dreaming, and much more.
The series began in 1987 and ended in 1996 after 75 issues (which have been collected into ten volumes). The series won nine Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, including the award for best writer four times, and three Harvey Awards. Sandman #19 received the 1991 World Fantasy Award for best short story, making it the first comic ever to be awarded a literary award. It is accepted that The Sandman created a new standard for the adult fantasy comic book, and helped lay the foundation for the success DC Comics' Vertigo line.
Dream interracts with many Vertigo characters such as John Constantine from the series Hellblazer, as well as several DC Comics superhero and super villain characters over the decades, including members of the Justice League.
Neil Gaiman chose to end the character with the end of the series. Morpheus is now no more, but there is a new "Dream" in place by the name of Daniel. Many of the characters created in the Sandman comics have had spin off books both collectively and on their own, in both limited and ongoing series.
