Map of Mongo as seen in the animated Flash Gordon series

Mongo is the planet ruled by Ming the Merciless, the archenemy of Flash Gordon of Earth. The planet has three main regions: The forests of Arboria, an area of caverns and mountains, and the frozen kingdom of Frigia. The planet is inhabited by the Lion Men, Hawk Men, and the Blue Magic Men.

In its newest iteration (on the SCI FI Channel), Mongo has a history that neatly and sadly pivots on a cataclysmic event that is simply known as "The Great Sorrow."

This murky environmental disaster made clean water the most precious commodity on the planet. The rise of Ming and his control over all the cantons of Mongo are related to his iron-fisted control of drinkable "Source Water."

Before the disaster, a time known aptly as "Pre-Sorrow," the culture enjoyed a rich renaissance. It was lush and full of resources. The main cantons were united under a loose council system and were ruled by the great Verden leaders, ancestors of Barin.

Along with his control of the water, Ming and his minions have surreptitiously (and often overtly) striven to create, maintain, and deepen discord, mistrust, and outright hostility among the cantons.

The more Ming can foster his description as "Benevolent Father" (he came up with the description himself), the more control he has over his squabbling "children," or cantons. And the more he can plot his claim to a potential new kingdom: Earth.
