Whether it's the bi-planes circling King Kong on top of the Empire State Building, or Arnold Schwarzenneger deep in the Central American jungle going one on one with the Predator, who better to take on a monster than a well-trained fighter?

Or, for that matter, a whole swarm of monsters, as in Aliens or Starship Troopers?

The action can be huge and sweeping: the Japanese military firing endlessly at Godzilla as he attacks Tokyo; or tight and claustrophobic, as when soldiers (and a reporter) try to defeat The Thing (from another world) in an isolated arctic research station.

The military may be portrayed as heroically brave or recklessly kill-happy. They may work with the scientists or be at odds with them.

One way or another, the Military versus monsters theme gives us a chance for some great explosions and cool special effects.
