Miles Mander (Lionel Mander) (May 14, 1888 – February 8, 1946) Lean British character actor and former New Zealand sheep farmer, automobile racer, novelist and playwright, prize-fight promoter, theatre manager and failed entrepreneur. After unsuccessfully standing for the British Parliament in 1934, he moved to Hollywood, where he lent solid support in such films as Tower of London (1939), The House of Seven Gables (1940), Fingers at the Window (1942), Tarzan’s New York Adventure (1942), The Phantom of the Opera (1943), The Pearl of Death (1944), The Scarlet Claw (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) and The Brighton Strangler (1945). Credited with discovering actresses Merle Oberon and Madeleine Carroll, he was often cast as either victim or villain and portrayed the scheming Cardinal Richelieu in both the 1935 and 1939 versions of The Three Musketeers.
