Michelle Yeoh (B. Yang Zi Chong, August 6, 1962, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia) is a Malaysian actress well known for her roles in Hong Kong action films. A dancer since the age of four, Yeoh moved to London in her teen years to study at the Royal Academy. She worked as a dancer for a few years before entering and winning the Miss Malaysia beauty pageant title and the Miss Moomba beauty pageant title in Melbourne, Australia. She transitioned to television work in the mid 1980s and began working in action films in Hong Kong in 1985. Unlike other actions stars like Jet Li and Jackie Chan with whom she has worked, Yeoh is not a trained martial artist. She does her own stunts however, using her background in dance. Though she has appeared in many Chinese-language films, Yeoh does not read chinese and her first languages are English and Malay.
Yeoh became popular among Western audiences after her English-language film debut in the James Bond thriller, Tomorrow Never Dies. Other notable films include
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha , Sunshine, Babylon A.D. and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
