Michael Marshall Smith

Michael Marshall Smith (b. 1965) is a British author, who was born in Knutsford, Cheshire, and grew up in the United States, South Africa and Australia before moving to north London, where he lives with his herbalist wife Paula, his son and two cats. After earning a degree in Philosophy from Cambridge University, he spent some time as a comedy writer and performer for BBC Radio. In 1991 he won British Fantasy Awards for Best Newcomer and for his debut story, “The Man Who Drew Cats”, and he followed those with two more for his short fiction, some of which is collected in What You Make It and the International Horror Guild Award-winning More Tomorrow & Other Stories. He is the author of three science fiction novels: Only Forward won the August Derleth Award and the Philip K. Dick Award, Spares was optioned by Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks SKG and translated into seventeen languages, and One of Us was optioned by Warner Brothers. Seven of his short stories are also under option. Writing as “Michael Marshall” he has recently completed a series of three thriller novels – The Straw Men, The Lonely Dead (aka The Upright Man) and Blood of Angels – which have been London Sunday Times and international best-sellers. He has also written a number of film and television scripts for companies in Hollywood and London.
