Michael Dawson is a fictional character on the series Lost portrayed by Harold Perrineau Jr.. Michael was a main character in the series' first two seasons. He survived the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 in the plane's midsection with his son Walt.
Before the crash
Michael lived with girlfriend and lawyer Susan Lloyd-Porter and he worked in construction. He was also a budding artist. They were a happy couple and Susan gave birth to their son, Walter, on August 24, 1994. Their relationship later fell apart and Susan left, taking Walt with her to Europe where she received a lucrative job offer. Michael struggled to gain the right to see his son but without much money and not having been married, his powers were limited.
Michael was hit by a car shortly after a heated argument with Susan on the phone. While recovering from his significant injuries, he drew cards for his son. Susan paid his medical bills and visited him and asked him to sign over all custody rights to Walt to allow her new husband, Brian to adopt him. Michael challenged the idea but lost and missed his son growing up.
Susan died of a blood disorder and Michael contacted him to hand over custody of Walt to Michael. Brian implied the reason for his decision was because Walt was somehow different. Michael visited Australia to pick up his son. Unsure if he was going to be a good father to Walt, he called his mother to gain her help in caring for Walt. The plane crashed however, and Michael was forced to get to know his son, though it proved difficult.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
