Metamorpho the Element Man, is a fictional comic book superhero character owned by DC Comics.
Due to exposure to some strange unearthly radiation, the chemical components in Rex’s body were scrambled into a freakish white-skinned form. His ability to change into any element within the human body has transformed Rex into an inhuman creature, seemingly forever separating him from a future with his lady love.
Metamorpho’s body can change both shape and substance at will. He can shift it from gas to liquid and then back to solid form all with a thought. He can become a fluorine cloud, a tank of clear liquid water, or an iron-cobalt battering ram. By transforming it in this way, he can allow bullets and ray beams to pass harmlessly through him, and doesn’t seem to have any human internal organs anymore if he is hit by something. He can transform his entire body, or just parts of it into different shapes made up of elements and compounds.
Supporting cast Clockwise: Rex Mason before accident, Rex with Sapphire, Metamorpho as a hang glider, Simon Stagg, and Java
Rex Mason was the first super hero whose arch nemesis was his future father-in-law. Center to his mythology was his love for Sapphire Stagg and the mutual hatred and disdain held between him and Sapphire’s father, the wealthy and power mad Simon Stagg. Stagg’s loyal assistant is called Java, who appears to be some kind of half-man and half-ape, and share’s his master’s hatred and jealousy of Rex. This strange triangle is at the heart of the Metamorpho story.
Metamorpho was the first superhero to originally turn down membership in the Justice League, but did become a member in a later era. He has also been a founding member of the underground superhero team founded by Batman, the Outsiders, and appears regularly in the current run of the Outsiders comic book series.
Character Origin
Rex Mason began as an “Indiana Jones” type adventurer, spanning the world in many battles and seeking out all kinds of unlikely treasures. Mason was not ordinarily a greedy man, but he longed to marry Sapphire Stagg, and wanted the wealth that it would take to support her in the style of life to which she was accustomed.
Simon Stagg promised Rex that fortune when he enticed him to seek the Orb of Ra within the pyramid of Rak-Ton. Rex was able to find the orb, but Simon had no intention in letting Rex get enough money to marry his daughter. With some slight encouragement, Rex was mugged by Java, Simon’s ape-like assistant, who had also become enamored with Sapphire. Knocking Rex out, he left him for dead in the ancient pyramid.
Within the pyramid was an ancient radioactive meteor whose radiation was altered by the Orb of Ra to strange effect. The unique radiation prevented Rex from dying, but altered his body chemistry, turning him into Metamorpho, the Element Man.
