Metagene

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

A metagene is a fictional comic book idea intended to explain all the amazing origins of super-beings in the DC Comics universe.

Why do certain people get super-powers from accidents or potions, when other people just die from them? The lucky ones have the metagene, which, when activated, turns you into a metahuman.

When Barry Allen was struck by lightning and a bath of random chemicals, why wasn't he electrocuted? Instead he became the superhero, the Flash. The theory goes that those with superpowers derived from the "freak accident" motif actually had a "metagene" within them that becomes activated under extreme physical stress to give them a super-power instead of a quick death.
