While Max earns a living as a bike messenger, she supplements her income by being a thief. In the pilot episode, Max meets Logan Cale (who operates "Eyes Only") during a failed robbery in his penthouse. Impressed by her skills, Logan searches for Max and stumbles upon her Manticore background. They form a mutually beneficial agreement: Max helps him to fight corruption, and he helps her find her old Manticore group.
On the outside, Max is just like every other girl. For protection, she needs to keep her background a secret—her closest friend, Original Cindy, does not learn about Manticore until well into the first season. While she tries to overcome her conditioning, it sometimes gets in the way of her daily life. For this reason, her relationship with Logan is constantly filled with troubles, and she must explain her way out of many situations at work.
