Mary Poppins is a series of children's books written by P. L. Travers. The original novels were illustrated by Mary Shepard. The books feature main character Mary Poppins who is blown by the wind to Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, London where she joins the Banks' household and cares for their children. The series is made up of eight novels published between 1935 and 1988.
Novels
Mary Poppins
First published in 1934, Mary Poppins is the first novel in the series and introduces Mary, and the Banks family which consists of Mr. and Mrs. Banks and their children Jane, Michael, and baby twins John and Barbara.
Mary Poppins Comes Back
First published in 1935, Mary Poppins Comes Back focuses on Mary's return to the Banks family to take care of the children including the family's newest member, Annabel.
Mary Poppins Opens the Door
In this 1943 novel, Mary returns once again, having secured a return ticket since leaving the children last. They all visit her uncle, Mr. Twigley.
Mary Poppins in the Park
Published 1952, the fourth in the series focuses on Mary and the children's outings at the park.
Mary Poppins From A to Z
Published in 1962, Mary Poppins From A to Z is a series of twenty-six vignettes, one for each letter of the alphabet.
Mary Poppins in the Kitchen
Published in 1975, in the sixth in the series sees Mary rescuing the Banks when their cook must leave on short notice. She teaches the children cooking basics.
Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane
Published in 1982, Mary takes the children on a Midsummer's Eve adventure.
Mary Poppins and the House Next Door
The final Mary Poppins novel was published in 1988. The Banks family learns that the house next door is about to be occupied by Mary's childhood governess, Miss Andrew, the Holy Terror.

Adaptations
The best known adaptations of the novels series was the 1964 Disney production Mary Poppins. The film's script was approved by an extremely cautious Travers who doubted the ability of the film to truly bring her novels to life. In the musical film, Mary is portrayed by Julie Andrews. The music comes from the Sherman Brothers.
In 2004, Mary Poppins: The Musical opened at the Prince Edward Theatre, London. The musical was a big success and was nominated for nine Oliver awards in it's opening year. A Broadway production opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning one for its scenic design.
