Marshall Sumner is a fictional character on the series Stargate Atlantis played by Robert Patrick. Sumner appeared in the series premier, Rising as Atlantis' military leader. Sumner is an authoritative by-the-book guy with a deep respect for rules, regulations, and the chain of command. He objected to the inclusion of Lt. John Sheppard on the expedition and as a member of his military team due to Shepherd's past problem with following the commands of his superiors.

Sumner led a military team, to the planet Athos in search of a ZPM to power Atlantis' shield. While there, the planet came under attack by Wraith darts. Sumner and several members of his team were taken by the Wraith and transported to a Wraith hive ship on another planet. Sumner was interrogated by the vessel's keeper who used her mental powers to force him to reveal the existence of billions of humans on Earth on which the Wraith could feast. The keeper fed on Sumner but, at his acquiescence, he was shot and killed by Lt. Shepherd, there to rescue him and the others taken, before the keeper could finish the painful process of taking his life.
