Maria Ouspenskaya (July 29, 1876 – December 3, 1949) Distinguished Russian character actress who traveled to America in 1923 on tour with the Moscow Art Theatre. She remained on Broadway, turning to films in 1936. As Maleva the gypsy in both The Wolf Man (1940) and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) she ensured that Larry Talbot’s way was not too thorny. She also appeared in The Mystery of Marie Roget (1942) and Tarzan and the Amazons (1944) before dying as a result of a stroke and burns caused by smoking in bed.
