Malcolm Reynolds (AKA "Mal" to his crew and Captain Tightpants to his fans) is a fictional character created by Joss Whedon for his short-lived series Firefly. The character was played by Nathan Fillion in the series and the film continuation, Serenity. Reynolds is a former sergeant volunteering on the side of the Independents opposing the Alliance in the Unification War. The Independents lost, defeated at the Battle of Serenity Valley on the planet Hera. But rather than subject himself to life on an Alliance world, Reynolds purchased a Firefly-class transport vessel and began transporting cargo.
