Malcolm McDowell (b. June 13, 1943) is an English actor and voice artist born Malcolm John Taylor in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. McDowell may be remembered best for his role as Alex in A Clockwork Orange but has appeared in in numerous scifi productions. He is also well known for his role as mad scientist Dr. Tolian Soran in the movie Star Trek: Generations.
McDowell's first job was serving drinks at his parents' pub and selling coffee in Yorkshire. He attended the Cannock House School and took acting classes before joining the the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s. He made his film debut in the 1967 film, Poor Cow. He protrayed a defiant student in the film If and impressed director Lindsay Anderson, who cast him in O Lucky Man and Britannia Hospital.
McDowell's performance drew notice from Stanley Kubrick who offered him the role of Alex in the film version of the Anthony Burgess novel, A Clockwork Orange. His performance garnered a Golden Globe nomination for best Actor but also type-cast him as a villain. He starred in the title role of Caligula (1979), and also appeared Blue Thunder and Cat People.
In addition to his work in film, McDowell has also appeared in and lent his voice to the video games Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest, Superman: Shadow of Apokolips, Star Trek: Generations, Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh, Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom and Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger.
McDowell has recently appeared on the NBC Heroes in the role of Mr. Linderman.
