History
Maia was one of the first known abductees. When she returned, she was a girl out of time; her family was long dead along with everything familiar. It soon became apparent that Maia possessed and eerie ability to see the future. After the 4400 were released from quarantine, Maia was placed with a foster family, the Griffins. Unable to deal with Maia's strange ability, they returned her to NTAC where Maia bonded with NTAC agent Diana Skouris. Maia asked Diana to take her home with her, and Diana, though initially wary, could not say no.
Season 2
Diana fell in love with Maia and eventually adopted her. Happy with her new life, Maia claimed her visions of the future were gone. She was compelled to write what she saw in her diary, however, and when she had a vision of Jordan Collier's death, she was unable to hold her knowledge of the future in any longer.
Maia was excited when Diana's sister, April, came to visit. Diana wasn't overjoyed about the visit but Maia was excited to have more family. Maia shared her abilities with April but soon came to believe April was using her abilities for her own personal gain and didn't really care about her. Maia was very hurt and took her revenge by telling April a false vision of the future. April came to realize she'd mistreated Maia and the two eventually rebuilt their relationship.
In the episode "Lockdown", Diana noticed a strange rash on Maia's arm. Maia became deathly ill and Diana feared for her life. Diana and her partner Tom Baldwin's investigation led them to their own boss Dennis Ryland. Ryland masterminded a plan to drug the 4,400 with Promicin inhibitor in order to suppress their superhuman abilities. Dr. Kevin Burkhoff was able to devise a serum that would cure the illness and Diana gave it to Shawn Farrell who then used his abilities to heal Maia and the other 4400.
Season 3
Once off the inhibitor, Maia's abilities werere stronger than ever. She received visions of the future more frequently and with much more clarity. While she'd grown able to cope with her abilities while on the inhibitor, being able to see everything and unable to control it, made Maia depressed. Diana took her to The 4400 Center in the hopes of gaining help and she learned of a school for the 4,400 children at the center. Maia was excited at the prospect of attending classes with children like herself taught by teachers who understood and could help nurture their gifts. Diana reluctantly agreed to enroll her.
In the episode "Gone, Part 1", Maia was visited by a woman who claimed to be Maia's long lost sister. Diana was wary of her, having previously searched for Maia's family with no success. Diana's worry was justified when the woman, Sara, lured Maia away and imprisoned her with several other 4400 children in a large house. Maia soon discovered that Sara was from the future and she intended to send Maia further back in time to fix the timeline. Maia was sent back to the nineteenth century where she died of smallpox at the age of 25. Her presence in the past somehow led to an advance in space exploration technology and there was a colony on the moon in the new timeline.
With Maia gone, all memories of her were erased but not completely. Her image began to appear in Tom and Alana's alternate reality escapes and Diana experienced a sense of loss she couldn't explain. Alana helped Diana remember Maia but devastated by the loss of her daughter, Diana refused to leave the false reality, intentionally trapping herself in a comatose state. Tom risked death to contact the people of the future. He made a deal with them to return Maia to his time. Maia managed to rescue her mother from the reality in which she had trapped herself.
In "The Gospel According to Collier", Diana's sister April returned from a trip to India with a new boyfriend. She introduced Ben to Diana believing he was "the one" and that Diana would approve. Diana immediately liked Ben but shortly after their meeting Maia predicted that he and Diana would get married. Ben broke off his relationship with April and he and Diana began to see each other without April's knowledge.
Maia decided to tell her Aunt April what she'd seen, hoping it would help her get over her grief from losing Ben. Maia's plan backfired however, and April was devastated. Diana tried to console her but April was deeply hurt and depressed.
Character
Maia is a very sweet child, which can be at odds with her eerie visions of the future in which she sees and knows things no child should. Maia is mature and insightful for her age. In some ways she appears to understand that her visions could result in the loss of her innocence and happiness. She compensates by holding tightly to family and friends and revels in the joys of being a child.
Maia has often felt compelled to tell people what she sees. She has learned the hard way however, that people do not always react positively to her predictions. She has a strong sense of responsibility and if her vision shows someone in harm, she makes an effort to save them from the danger.
