Macross Plus is an anime OVA, which was first released in Japan in 1994. At the time, it had the biggest production budget of any anime project to date. It consists of four episodes, each about 40 minutes long.

Set 40 years after the end of the original Macross series and the first human-alien war against the Zentradi. Rogue pilot Isamu Alva Dyson is ordered to test-fly prototypes for the next generation of variable fighter used by the UN. Dyson is tasked with test-flying the Shinsei Industries YF-19 prototype, but he soon develops a bitter rivalry with another test-pilot, the half-Zentradi Guld Goa Bowman, who is test-flying the General Galaxy YF-21 fighter.

Things heat up into a love triangle when their mutual old girlfriend Myung Fang Lone shows up, who is the producer of the galaxy's biggest pop idol, Sharon Apple . . . who is actually an AI holographic construct.

However, the military is also developing an unmanned fighter, the X-9. This threatens to shut down all flying by human test pilots by rending them obsolete. However, Sharon Apple hijacks the X-9, and they have to stop her.
