Lucy Lawless is an actress born Lucille Frances Ryan on March 29, 1968 in Mount Albert, Auckland, New Zealand to parents Frank and Julie Ryan. She comes from an Irish Catholic family and has five elder brothers and a younger sister.
She attended Auckland University where she studied language, namely German, French and Italian. She left school after a year and traveled Europe with boyfriend and future husband Garth Lawless. The couple traveled to Australia and took on odd jobs to make money including a stint at an Australian gold mining company. In 1987, at nineteen, Lucy discovered she was pregnant with her first child and she and Garth married and returned to New Zealand. Lucy gave birth to a daughter, Daisy Lawless on July 15, 1988. The couple divorced in 1995 and Lawless remarried to Xena executive producer Robert G. Tapert on March 28, 1998. They have two sons, Judah Miro Tapert and Julius Bay Tapert.
Career
In 1989, Lawless appeared on the TV series Funny Business. In 1999 she visited Vancouver where she studied at the William Davis Center for Actors. She returned to New Zealand and appeared in Shark in the Park. She followed up with small roles in A Bitter Song, and
The Rainbow Warrior.
In 1994 Lawless appeared in the TV Movie Hercules and the Amazon Women as Lysia. She also played the character of Lyla in an episode of the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys before the directors cast her in the role of Xena, a villainous Warrior Princess aided in her reformation by Hercules. Xena became a recurring character on the series. Her hair was dyed a darker color to distinguish her from the characters she'd previously played. The character was so popular that in 1995 she was cast in her own series, Xena: Warrior Princess. The show was a success and lasted six seasons ending in 2001. It was something of a pop culture phenomenon and the relationship between Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle played by Renee O'Connor raised questions about their characters sexuality. Xena became a hero of sorts to the lesbian community.
When Xena ended, Lawless continued to act, appearing in two episodes of The X-Files, as a super soldier named Shannon. In 2003 she joined the main cast of the short-lived series Tarzan. She made film appearances in EuroTrip, Boogeyman, and The Darkroom, Spider-Man and the TV movies Locusts and Vampire Bats.
In 2005, Lawless guest starred on the series Battlestar Galactica as a reporter D'anna Biers. Biers was later revealed as a Cylon agent. Lawless appeared in several more episodes in 2006 despite her initial wariness about committing to a TV series.
In addition to her appearances on Battlestar Galactica, Lawless has made use of her singing skills, appearing on the reality competition series Duets. In 2007 she will lend her voice to the film Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight.
Quotes
“We live at the edge of the world, so we live on the edge. Kiwis will always sacrifice money and security for adventure and challenge.”
“Yeah. I'm saving the world from vampire bats, ... It's very serious business.”
"Xena doesn't rely on a man for help, and she doesn't come across as stupid. I loved playing her. It gave me a husband, a beautiful family and a home. It is probably the best role I will ever play in terms of scope and range."
"After Xena wrapped, I lost what would have been my second child with Robert. Looking back, I knew that something wasn't right. It wasn't the way I felt with other pregnancies -but it's a heartbreak when it happens."
