Louis Gossett Jr. (b, May 27, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York) is an Academy Award-winning American actor. His genre contributions include guest appearances on The Six Million Dollar Man, Early Edition, The Dead Zone and Stargate SG-1. He also appeared in several scifi films including Monolith, Momentum, and Firewalker.

Gosset turned to acting after a leg injury high school briefly ended his time on the basketball court. He made his professional acting debut at 17 and his Broadway debut in Take a Giant Step which earned him a Donaldson Award as best newcomer. Despite his interest in acting, Gossett never gave up his love for basketball. He was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1958 while still in college. He played for the team briefly before devoting himself completely to his acting career.

Gossett made his film debut reprising his stage role as George Murchison in A Raisin in the Sun. He followed up with guest appearances on several TV series including the Sci Fi series The Invasion. He continued to appear on stage but made an increasing number of film and television appearances, most memorably, his Emmy Award-winning performance in the miniseries Roots alongside LeVar Burton. He also starred in the short-lived 1970 series The Young Rebels.

Following his Emmy win, Gossett experienced increasing career success. He won a 1982 Oscar for his supporting role alongside Richard Gere in An Officer and A Gentleman and also in 1982 mentored an alien prince in The Powers of Matthew Star.

Gossett is known for his authoritative roles and his readily identifiable voice. He has lent his voice to the video game Half-Life 2, and The Batman, and the 2008 animated film Delgo. In 2008 he appears in the films The Perfect Game, Buttermilk Sky and The Real Catch.
