Lou Diamond Phillips (b. February 17, 1962) is an American actor born Lou Upchurch at the Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines. He was named after Gunnery Sargeant, Lou Diamond of the US Marine Corps and is of Spanish, Scottish, Irish, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian, and Cherokee descent. His father, George Upchurch, died in his youth and his mother remarried and he adopted his stepfather's surname. He is best known for his breakout role in the biopic La Bamba, a film based on the life of 50's rock star Ritchie Valens.

Philips attended Flour Bluff High School near Corpus Christi, Texas and later the University of Texas at Arlingron where he earned a BFA in drama and appeared in local stage productions. He made his film debut in 1984 in Interface. After appearing in his breakthrough role in La Bamba, he starred alongside Edward James Olmos in the high school dramatic film, Stand and Deliver. Though filmed first, Stand and Deliver opened in theaters after La Bamba. He followed up with roles in Young Guns, Renegades, the 1990 horror feature The First Power and the sequel to Young Guns, Young Guns II.

In the 90s, his career faltered. He appeared in several forgettable films such as Shadow of the Wolf, Wind in the Wire, Sioux City, Teresa's Tatoo and Dangerous Touch. He also guest starred on Tales from the Crypt. In 1995, he enjoyed success once more when he was surprisingly cast in the role of King Mongkut in Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I. Despite negative predictions by critics, the musical production proved a great success.
