Loki is a fictional comic book super villain owned by Marvel Comics. He is the arch nemesis of the superhero character Thor (Marvel Comics). Like Thor, he is based on Norse mythology.
Loki is a the son of the Laufrey, the king of the giants of Jotunheim, a kingdom in Asgard. Asgard is the dimension where the Norse gods are said to reside. When Odin, king of the gods, went to war with the giants, Laufrey was killed. Loki was born a normal size baby, and was therefore shunned by his inhumanly large race. Since Odin recognized him as a son of a king, he decided to adopt him and raise him as his own.
Loki grew up jealous and bitter, comparing his lot always with Odin’s warrior son, Thor. His jealousy and resentment caused him to earn the title, “The God of Mischief”, and later, “The God of Evil”. He constantly planned to undermine his adopted brother and father, hoping one day to claim the title of the king of Asgard.
Loki is as immortal as the other Asgardians, and has incredible magic and sensory powers, and can even project himself into the minds of others, and hear and observe the happenings in other dimensions. He has been known to change his shape, animate objects, and imbue others with incredible powers. He has an incredibly devious mind, and likes to scheme complex and manipulative plans against his enemies. One of his most infamous early plans was the manipulation of the Hulk to wreak havoc on Earth, leading to the formation of the superhero team, The Avengers (Marvel Comics).
Loki has committed innumerable crimes, and has been punished, killed and sent away, but he always returns. He led Asgard’s enemies against them, helping to bring on Ragnarock, the twilight of the gods. It was later discovered that the gods survived in mortal form, and have been restored slowly by Thor. Loki now exists in female form, he (now a she) is working with Doctor Doom, plotting against Thor and Asgard once more, in the on-going Thor comic book series.
