Liz Shaw is a character who appeared regularly in season 7 of the long-running series Doctor Who. As played by actress Caroline John, Liz was an accomplished scientist from the University at Cambridge. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart had brought her in as a scientific adviser to his UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) organization.

At first, Liz was skeptical about working with UNIT. However, the Doctor's reappearance on Earth in the midst of an invasion by the Nestene Consciousness caused her to reconsider. She essentially became the Doctor's assistant in combatting this and other alien menaces.

She quickly tired of playing second fiddle to the Doctor's overwhelming scientific expertise, complaining to the Brigadier that all the Doctor needed was someone to pass him the test tubes and tell him how wonderful he was. She returned to Cambridge after participating in only four adventures.

Having assisted the Doctor during his exile on Earth, Liz is perhaps the only companion to the Doctor who seems never to have traveled in the TARDIS.
