Lester del Rey is the pen name of American science fiction writer and editor. He was born June 2, 1915 as Leonard Knapp, but used to joke that his actual name was "Ramon Felipe Alvarez-del Rey." His successful writing and editing career led to his own publishing imprint, Del Rey Books at Ballantine.
During the 1950s, he was considered to be one of the three big science fiction writers of books geared toward the juvenile audience. The other two were Robert A. Heinlein and Andre Norton.
In 1990, three years before his death, he was awarded the Grand Master Award by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
