History
Three thousand years ago, Langara was occupied by the Goa'uld Thanos who launched an experiment to convert the valuable mineral naquadah into highly unstable naquadria while the mineral was still in the ground. The experiment nearly destroyed the planet but the planet survived and several thousand years later, the Kelownans discovered the Stargate as well as the naquadria.
Kelowna, technologically on par with mid-twentieth century Earth, were experimenting with the use of naquadria to create a weapon when SG-1 first visited the planet. SG-1, and Daniel Jackson in particular, tried to convince them of the danger in proceeding with their plans, calling on Earth's own history with nuclear weapons as an example as well as their knowledge of the explosive power of naquada. An accident occurred in the lab and Dr. Jackson immediately realized the potential disaster; he risked severe radiation exposure to save Kelowna and ultimately died as a result. Despite his heroism, the Kelownans attempted to blame him for the accident. Jonas Quinn ultimately defected to Earth with as much naquadria as he could acquire.
Contact between Earth and Kelowna was severed until Stargate Command was contacted by the Kelownan government who requested the SGC's aid in their war against their neighbors who joined together to bring about what the Kelownans believes would be their destruction. Earth refused to offer them military technology. Following the end of negotiations with the planet, the Kelownans tested their naquadria bomb as a demonstration to their enemies and immediately regretted as it far exceeded their expectations of its destructive potential.
In the episode "Homecoming", the Goa'uld, Anubis gleaned knowledge of naquadria from the mind of Jonas Quinn. He arrived at the planet and demanded all the naquadria which the Kelownans had already depleted. With the Goa'uld threat, maintaining the secrecy of the Stargate became impossible and its existece was revealed to the leaders of Terrania and the Andarian Federation. Anubis had the Kelownan First Minister, Vellis, executed.
Ultimately, Langara was saved from the Goa'uld by the intervention of an alliance of the System Lords against Anubis. In the aftermath of their experience with a greater threat, a joint council was formed and Jonas Quinn returned to his planet as an ambassador of peace. It was at this time that the planet was named Langara which has its origin in a language common to all three nations.
The continued existence of the Langaran people came under threat some time later when the planet began experiencing severe earthquakes resulting from an ongoing chain reaction in which naquadah was being converted into naquadria. The council visited Earth to pursue relocation options but had difficulty agreeing. When it was discovered that the conversion began as a result of the Kelownans naquadria bomb test, the other nations became angry and requested their own planets for relocation despite the lack of resources for survival. Fortunately, a drilling device invented by Jonas Quinn and a goa'uld inhabited scientist was able to put an end to the chain reaction and save the planet.
