Colonel Kira Nerys (2343) is a fictional character on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine played by Nana Visitor. She represented Bajor on the Deep Space Nine space station as the Bajoran Liaison officer to Starfleet. She was currently an officer in the Bajoran militia. During the Cardassian Occupation she was a rebel and a freedom fighter.
Kira Nerys, referred to as Major Kira (Bajorans placed their surname first), fought her whole life for the end of the Cardassian occupation, as both a soldier and a terrorist. Now that she was a Major in the Bajoran Militia and the second in command on Deep Space Nine, the space station built by the Cardassians as a tool of oppression but would now operate in the interests of the Bajoran people, she should have been happy. But all was not well. She was uncomfortable with the Federation's presence, even though they were there at the request of the Bajoran provisional goverment to provide security for the still recovering Bajoran people. Wasn't having Starfleet here just trading one oppressor for another?
Also, she was, at times, uncomfortable with her position of authority. She spent her life opposing authority, now it was her job to represent the government against those who would not conform or acknowledge it. It seemed a bitter irony, and it was not a role she was always comfortable with.
Kira is a beautiful woman, and has had love affairs with two of the most powerful Bajorans ever. She has what appear to be wrinkled ridges down her nose, a Bajoran racial characteristic. She always wears a decorative ear ring on her right ear, a religious custom among her people as well.
Also, her devotion to the Bajoran religion, her slow growing respect for Benjamin Sisko (her Starfleet commanding officer), and her past as a righteous Bajoran rebel and terrorist, all made her one of the most interesting complex characters of the Star Trek franchise.
By the end of the series, she would be promoted to the rank of Colonel.
