Keira Christina Knightley (March 26, 1985) is an Academy Award-nominated British actress born in Teddington, Middlesex, England to actor Will Knightley and playwright Sharman Macdonald. She began acting as a child, appearing in A Village Affair at age nine. Knightley landed her first significant role playing a decoy to Queen Amidala in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. She followed up with TV appearances in Oliver Twist and Princess of Thieves and The Hole. Her breakthrough performance came with the Gurinder Chadha romantic comedy Bend it Like Backham. This success led to roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series as Elizabeth Swann, the romantic comedy Love Actually and 2004's King Arthur.
In 2005, Knightley was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Pride & Prejudice. She also appeared alongside Oscar winner Adrien Brody in the time travel thriller The Jacket. In 2007 she gave her final performance as Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Other roles include Silk, Atonement and The Best Time of Our Lives.
