Also rendered as Katsuhiro Ôtomo (b. (April 14, 1954), was born in Hasama, Myagi Prefecture, Japan. He began working in the field of animation in 1973. He is an anime director and writer best known for one of the most influential anime films in history, Akira. Other work in the genre include Metropolis, Steamboy, Rôjin Z Robot Carniva, and Mushishi.
