Kathleen Robertson plays Azkadellia in the SCI FI Channel's miniseries Tin Man, which airs December 2007 on the SCI FI Channel.
The character of Azkadellia is based on the Wicked Witch of the West from L. Frank Baum's classic book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but, according to Robertson, she's even scarier and more unpredictable than the original.
In an interview at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, California, Robertson said, "Nick Willing, the director, and I spent a lot of time before we started shooting, really sort of getting a feel for how we wanted the character to be portrayed. And I actually play her very opposite to how you'd expect. She's very, very still. And very quiet . . . which is scarier, I think. She's very quiet and still, and everyone is terrified of her."
Tin Man takes place in a fantastic realm called the Outer Zone, or O.Z., where a girl named D.G. (played by Zooey Deschanel) embarks on a perilous journey of discovery along with her companions Glitch (Alan Cumming), an odd man missing half his brain; Raw (Raoul Trujillo), a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage; and Cain (Neal McDonough), a heroic former policeman (known in the O.Z. as a "Tin Man"), who is seeking vengeance for his scarred heart.
For Robertson, the chance to take on the character was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "It's without a doubt, for me, the most incredible character I've ever had an opportunity to play," she said. "Azkadellia rules [the O.Z.]. She's the ruler of [the O.Z.], but she's completely schizophrenic. She's basically a 12-year-old girl living inside the body of a 500-year-old witch. And she's dressed like a dominatrix, kind of like a fashion-model dominatrix, and it's wild, but she's so damaged. She controls everything."
Robertson was born July 8, 1973, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
