Kate Elizabeth Winslet (b. October 5, 1975, Reading, Berkshir, England, UK) is an Academy Award-nominated English actress. Winslet has been nominated five times for the Oscar, first for her performance in Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and again for her breakout role in the hit film Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. She also earned nominations for Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind alongside Jim Carrey and Little Children.
Winslet was born to stage actors Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges-Winslet. Her grandparents were also in the theatre business. She landed her first professional role in a cereal commercial at eleven and began taking acting lessons. She studied acting at her performing arts high school and made appearances on sitcoms and series, landing a regular role on the British scifi series Dark Season. Her first major role came with the film Heavenly Creatures directed by Peter Jackson. Winslet portrayed and obsessive teen and her performance earned her an Empire Award.
She made her genre film debut in 1995 in A Kid in King Arthur's Court. As an adult Winslet has focused on meaningful dramatic roles in films like Hamlet, Quills and Finding Neverland in which she starred alongside Johnny Depp. Other notable roles include The Holiday with Cameron Diaz, a voice role in Flushed Away and Gnomeo and Juliet.
