Kate Beckinsale (b. July 26, 1973) is an English actor born in London, England to actress Judy Loe and comedic actor, Richard Beckinsale. Kate has one elder half sister, actress Samantha Beckinsale from her father's previous marriage to Margaret Bradley. Richard Beckinsale died in 1979 when Kate was only six years old. Three years later, her mother began dating director Roy Battersby and Kate was forced to share her life with his four children. Despite her initial objections, she eventually bonded with her stepfather.
She attended Godolphin and Latymer School. She expressed herself through writing in her teens and won the British bookseller W.H. Smith Young Writers' competition twice for three short stories and three poems. Kate suffered anorexia during her teen years and began smoking.
While still in her teens, Beckinsale made her television debut in One Against the Wind, filmed in Luxembourg in the summer of 1991. The same fall, she entered Oxford University's New College where she majored in French and Russian literature. Beckinsale followed in her father's footsteps pursuing acting. During her freshman year, she landed the role of Hero in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing. she followed up with a role as Ethel in Prince of Jutland and the drama Uncovered.
Beckinsale spent her final year of college studying in Paris where she immersed herself in the language and culture. After some self exploration, she decided to leave school and focus on her acting career. In 1995, she appeared in Cold Comfort Farm which one critical acclaim in the US. Beckinsale took her career to the stage touring with the Thelma Holts Theatre Company in its production of Anton Chekov's Seagull.
She followed her stage run with Haunted, Emma and the romantic comedy Shooting Fish. Her first significant American film was Brokedown Palace with Claire Danes. Beckinsale became a household name to American audiences when she appeared in the blockbuster hit, Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck. She followed up with the romance Serendipity starring opposite John Cusack.and appeared in Laurel Canyon in which she played a Harvard graduate who becomes distracted by the rock'n roll lifestyle of her mother-in-law.
Next came the role in which she is best known to genre fans, as the vampire Selene in Underworld. The film was directed by her husband, Len Wiseman. She reprised the role in the film's sequel Underworld: Evolution. Other roles include Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman, The Aviator with Leonardo Di Caprio and Click with Adam Sandler.
Upcoming films include Snow Angels, Vacancy, and April 23.
Personal Life
Beckinsale dated Welsh actor Michael Sheen who starred as Lucian in Underworld They have a daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, born January 31, 1999). The two ended their relationship in 2003 and Beckinsale became engaged to director Len Wiseman. They married on May 9, 2004.
