Before the crash

Kate was born in 1977 and raised in Iowa by her mother Diane Janssen and Sam Austen whom she believed was her father. Her biological father was a man known only as Wayne. Diane separated from Sam and reunited with Wayne. Kate despised him as he abused her mother ad made sexual advances toward her. After discovering he was her father, she took out a home owner's insurance policy on their home and plotted to kill Wayne via a gas explosion that destroyed the house with Wayne inside.

Diane turned her daughter in forcing her to go on the run, chased by U.S. Marshall Edward Mars. Mars caught up to her, but she managed to escape when a black horse ran before the car causing an accident that injured Mars.

Kate later learned her mother was hospitalized and dying of cancer. With the help of a friend, Tom Brennan, she snuck into the hospital to visit her but Diane betrayed her and called for the guards. Tom helped her escape but was shot and killed in the process.

She relocated to Florida and assumed the name Monica. She married a police officer, Kevin Callis. She enjoyed being married for a short while and told Mars to stop looking for her. Domesticity did not suit her however and she left Kevin, drugging him to protect him from being charged with any crimes.
